One Month to the High Holy Days: What Do We Stand For?
Dear Friends of Bayit Shelanu,
As High Holy Days nears, Jewish tradition offers a simple yet profound invitation: to take stock of who we are – what we stand for – what defines us – and who we still hope to become.
Leading into Rosh Hashanah, the Hebrew month of Elul calls us to cheshbon hanefesh—an accounting of the soul. Rather than leaving us burdened by past mistakes, this sacred period invites us to bring fresh intentions into our lives. This may feel difficult, as shifting from the familiar to the unknown is universally challenging, yet this time simply asks us to look honestly at what truly matters.
I frequently reference the profound words of Jewish philosopher and teacher Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel: “To be is to stand for.” This serves as a remarkable challenge for this moment.
Being Jewish goes far beyond personal belief; it is defined by the values we champion—and how those values find expression in the lives we lead and in the actions we take. And as Rosh Hashana approaches, we have the opportunity to reconfirm – and to celebrate – what we stand for, both as individuals and as Jews.
Yes, celebrate!
Because the High Holy Days are not only about introspection and repentance. They are also about possibilities –about beginning again, new hopes, renewing relationships, reconnecting with one another, and recognizing the extraordinary gift of another year of life.
And now, we are just ONE MONTH away from gathering again at our Synagogue by the Sea! Whether you will be with us in person or online, we hope you will make Bayit Shelanu part of your High Holy Days.
